James Holmes
Conductor
James Holmes is a conductor and arranger. He was Head of Music at Opera North from 1996 – 2008, with a guest appearance to conduct Paradise Moscow in 2009, and was previously resident conductor at English National Opera.
James has conducted concerts and opera around the world, including for the BBC, the City of Birmingham Symphony, Norwegian Radio Orchestra, Montreal Symphony, English National Opera, and the Royal Opera House. He has become known for his work in musical theatre, particularly in the music of Kurt Weill and Stephen Sondheim. He has also arranged Rodgers and Hammerstein for studio recordings by Bryn Terfel.
James was the associate music director for Nicholas Hytner's production of Carousel (National Theatre, 1993), and conducted over a hundred performances at the National Theatre and on Broadway.
